      1. A Question of Motor Skill Coordination?

John C LeMay:  “Many children have psychomotor coordination problems. This is one that I like to think about. Because, how many kids are diagnosed as attention deficit, however, you get them on a ball field, and they become demigods on the ball field?

Then we’ve got the uncoordinated kid who does really well in the classroom, but he is not coordinated at all on the ball field. And we are going to say that the kid in the classroom is attention deficit, but this kid on the ball field is not.

I have looked at some of those cases and scratched my head and asked, “Why … why not” This kid loses attention on what is happening; he is not focused in the game. As the coach says, “His head’s not in the game.” That coach would be willing to diagnose him as ADD.

Dr. Green: “How many kids who are good at baseball are bored? It’s a relatively tiny number. On the other hand, how many kids, no matter how hard they try, have difficulty catching or batting? They’re the ones chewing on their baseball mitts out in the outfield. Finally, the ball accidentally finds its way to them, and everyone is yelling and screaming at them, and they have to bring them back from their daze.

If that were in the classroom, you’d say, ‘Oh, he has an attention problem.’ Out in the field we just yell, and scream and criticize, and he gets chosen last.

See the difference? Maybe neither one is ADD. It’s an issue of motor skill coordination. It has nothing to do with his attention. But if it’s not working, why bother? Even if his intention is to stay in the game, within minutes he’s gone…just like in the classroom.”.
